Creative thinking and problem solving is difficult because it is contrary to normal thinking patterns which the brain is designed to utilize. Most engineers like to be right. Creativity on the other hand involves exploration and risk taking. In addition, part of creativity is recognizing that there is usually more than one solution to a problem, and making the effort to develop and evaluate alternatives to the first or most obvious solution. Because of these contradictions, a conscious management attitude is necessary in order to foster creativity within an engineering firm. Frequently the most creative yet effective solution appears in-hind sight to be simple and obvious.
