Problem: Design facilities necessary for the Village of Mundelein to convert a well water system to the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency's (CLCJAWA) Lake Michigan water supply system. Solution: RHMG designed three water storage resevoirs and four pump stations at four strategic locations throughout the Village plus associated water transmission mains. The resevoirs include 0.5 MG and 1.0 MG steel ground storage tanks and a 1.0 MG cast-in-place concrete, partially buried reservoir. Pump station capacities range from 2,000 to 3,600 gpm. The facilities were tailored to meet the aesthetic needs of each specific site. Special landscaping and architechtural treatments were provided at the more sensitive Route 176 site. The exterior of the Cambridge Booster Pump Station was designed to match the exterior of the adjacent residential houses. Each reseroir site included pressure adjustment and rate of flow equipment plus chlorination facilities. Control and monitoring of all components are centralized at one location. The Mundelein Lake Michigan Water Supply Project was completed on time and within budget for a total construction cost of $5,263,000. It has improved water quality, and increased water pressures for potable supply and fire protection for the 23,700 residents, as well as numerous commercial and industrial customers of the Village of Mundelein.
