Problem: Raw water iron concentrations at Well Nos. 3 and 4 range from 1.4 to 1.8 mg/l. The high iron concentration resulted staining of clothing and plumbing fixtures, and a noticeable undesirable water taste. The design of new facilities needed to fit on a congested site and be compatible with existing structures and adjacent residential buildings. Full operation of the existing wells and reservoir needed to be maintained during construction. Solution: Chemical oxidation via chlorine followed by gravity filtration. The 2,200 GPM water treatment facility included two 4 cell gravity filters, chlorination facilities, a waste backwash holding tank, and associated piping and controls. All facilities are housed within a building compatible with the existing well house and consistent with the adjacent residential buildings. The Well Nos. 3 and 4 Iron Removal Facilities is viewed as a success by the Village of Barrington. All major project goals were met. Most importantly, the raw water iron concentrations were reduced from between 1.4 and 1.8 mg/l down to 0.2 mg/l.
